
The rise and fall of Liangzhu City were both due to floods. During its 1,000-year existence, Liangzhu City became interdependent with water, and left many water conservancy related properties. Surrounded by mountains and waters, the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, with waterway entrances linking the water network, the city and dams built using technologies suiting local conditions, terraces, relics of a water town, the ingenious use of natural topography and the wisdom in flood control and water storage, includes typical wetland development based liveable settlements in a rice-cultivating agricultural area in East Asia. It can be said that the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City was a water town in regions south of the Yangtze River dating 5,000 years back.
