“Ritual implements as the embodiment of the ritual system” is a time-honoured concept in China. This concept, embodied in the Jade Cong, is also embodied in the layout of the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City as a triple city consisting of the Palace Area, the Inner City and the Outer City. The layout reflects social hierarchy and serves as a symbol of the centre of power, and is typical of the urban civilization of an early regional state in the Yangtze River Basin. The triple city layout was repeatedly found in later capital city planning in ritual system based ancient Chinese society.
