{{heritageName}} : Lord Fengsi and Master Yansheng

The past dynasties not only revered Confucius, but also bestowed titles on his eldest legitimate male descendents. In the Western Han Dynasty, the 9th generation male descendent of Confucius Kong Teng was given the title Lord Fengsi (“Offering Sacrifices”), which was inherited from generation to generation. In the Song Dynasty, the 46th generation male descendent of Confucius was given the title “Master Yansheng,” which was inherited until the 77th generation male descendent of Confucius. The Kong family became China’s oldest aristocratic family. The role of “Master Yansheng” was primarily to offer sacrifices to Confucius. The tile of “Master Yansheng” was inherited from generation to generation by the eldest legitimate male descendents of Confucius, who were also the leaders of the King family and even the local county, and were the owners of the Kong Family Mansion. Master Yansheng’s role was primarily to offer sacrifices to Confucius primarily in the Temple of Confucius and the Cemetery of Confucius. Also, the Kong Family Mansion was where Master Yansheng resided, worked and recreated.
