{{heritageName}} : Opera Towers

The passion of the imperial family of the Qing Dynasty for opera contributed to the birth of Peking Opera and helped promote the development of the opera industry and improvement of the social status of opera performers. Thus, the art of opera became unprecedentedly refined. This helped promote the development of opera towers. In the Chengde Mountain Resort were built many opera towers, including the stage at the Yunshan Shengdi Tower, the Qingyinge Opera Tower in the Fushou Garden and the Fupianyu Opera Tower on the Ruyizhou Island. The Qingyinge Opera Tower was first built during the Yongzheng reign. During the Qianlong reign, it was reconstructed into a three-storey building, which is the largest and structurally most complicated opera tower from the Qing Dynasty, and was where the emperor and Empress Dowager Cixi banqueted guests, held political events and celebrated festivals. Qing rulers still enjoyed Peking Opera at the Mountain Resort in the late Qing Dynasty when the regime was tottering.
