The outlying temples of the Chengde Mountain Resort began to be built during the Kangxi reign. By the Qianlong reign, 12 temples were built. They are collectively referred to as the “Eight Outlying Temples,” where “eight” is indicative and not exact. Each of the Eight Outlying Temples was built as a monument to extol a significant achievement of the Qing Dynasty in pacifying the frontier and the heyday of the Qing Dynasty. The Puning, Anyuan and Pule Temples were built after the imperial court quelled a rebellion launched by the Junggar regime. The Shuxiang and Guang’an Temples and the Arhat Hall were built after some old tribes paid allegiance to the Qing Dynasty again. Their construction was of profound political and religious significance. Also, the Mountain Resort witnessed many important events during the Qianlong reign, including the reception of representatives of the Turhot tribe and the Macartney Embassy, a British embassy to China.
