In 1691, the 30th year of the Kangxi reign, Emperor Kangxi declined Commander in Chief of Gubeikou Cai Yuan’s proposal to restore the Great Wall. He wanted to turn the surrounding Mongolian tribes into a spiritual Great Wall. This is what he called “unity of will being an impregnable stronghold.” Emperor Kangxi established the Mulan Hunting Ground in north Chengde. He made a northern inspection tour in the name of the autumn hunt each year, and built temporary dwelling palaces along the way. During his northern inspection tour in 1702, the 41st year of the Kangxi reign, Emperor Kangxi and his troops were stationed in Rehe, Chengde, where the Rehe Temporary Dwelling Palace was built. Nine years later, the palace proper was built, and Emperor Kangxi wrote the name “Mountain Resort” inscribed on the horizontal inscribed board. Thus, the second political centre of the Qing Dynasty appeared. The Mountain Resort is of profound cultural significance. It witnessed unprecedented national unity during the Kangxi and Qianlong reigns.
