In 202 BC, Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty bestowed the title of King of Minyue on Wuzhu, the leader of the Minyue people who was meritorious in overthrowing the Qin Dynasty, and the kingdom of Minyue was thus founded. Under the leadership of Wuzhu, the kingdom of Minyue reached a period of great prosperity, and left an unsolved mystery about its capital. The ancient Han Dynasty city of Chengcun is located at Chengcun Village, Xingtian Town, Wuyishan City in north Fujian. The village is also known by its ancient name of “Ancient Yue City.” The name, large size and complete facilities of the village suggest its uncommonness. No matter whether the ancient Han Dynasty city of Chengcun was the capital of Minyue or not, it reflects the exchanges and blending of Minyue, Chu, Yue and Han cultures. In 110 BC, the first year of the Yuanfeng reign of Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty, Minyue was abolished, and the Minyue people were relocated to northern China. Sima Qian wrote that from then on, “the land of the East Yue thus became empty.” However, Minyue was in fact still dynamic. Those Minyue people who were not relocated were called Shanyue, who finally blended into the culturally diversified yet integrated Chinese nation.
