Originally, the god Erlang was a local god of the Guankou area in Suzhong (present-day central Sichuan Province), and was known as the god of Guankou primarily engaged in water control. He fought with the river god who caused floods. He was known for his valour and wisdom. As a local god, the god Erlang and the water control god Li Bing from the imperial court became competitors for local sacrificial resources. Finally, the god Erlang was depicted as Li Bing’s son. The Erwang (Two Kings) Temple is one of the largest and most artistic architectural complexes in west Sichuan. The name and enshrinees of the temple changed over time. Finally, Li Bing and the god Erlang were enshrined together as the father and the son, with the god Erlang being dominant, somewhat reflecting the development of folk beliefs.
