{{heritageName}} : a Silver World

The Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains in China are Mount Wutai, associated with gold, Mount Emei, associated with silver, Mount Putuo, associated with copper, and Mount Jiuhua, associated with iron. In Buddhism, Mount Emei is known as a “silver world” because it is capped by silk cotton-like clouds. After the Song Dynasty, due to political and religious reasons, the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains became more influential than the traditional Five Great Mountains. A new sacred mountain system was established, and Mount Emei eventually became a centre for Samantabhadra Bodhisattva worship.
