The Shuzhuang Garden is a private garden built on Kulangsu by Lin Erjia in the first half of the 20th century. The garden integrates traditional Chinese and Western landscaping styles and appears as a unique coastal scholar garden. Also, the garden supported the Shuzhuang Poetry Society founded by Lin Erjia, one of the patriotic scholars who indignantly moved to Kulangsu after Taiwan was occupied by Japan. These scholars, influenced by modern Western ideology, dedicated themselves to the service of their motherland by proactively participating in government and political affairs, establishing industrial companies and promoting education.
