Kulangsu is the origin and best representation of the Amoy Deco Style. During the 1920-30s, Amoy Deco Style buildings appeared on Kulangsu. This architectural style illustrates the fusion of inspirations drawn from local building traditions, early western and in particular modernist influences as well as the southern Fujian Migrant culture. The facade is decorated in the southern Fujian style using red bricks and white stones. The Amoy Deco Style was the most popular architectural style on Kulangsu from the early to the mid-20th century, showing the national individuality of overseas Chinese coming from southern Fujian who were enthusiastic and expressive.
