{{heritageName}} : Influences from East and West

The Historic Centre of Macao includes the oldest Western-style buildings in China and reflects Macaos origin as a trading port city in Asia. With its historic streets, residential, religious and public Portuguese and Chinese buildings, the Historic Centre of Macao provides a unique testimony to the meeting of aesthetic, cultural, religious, architectural and technological influences from East and West. For example, the stone carvings of the Ruins of St. Paul's depict angels and demons in the Bible, a Portuguese merchant ship, Chinese lions and Japanese chrysanthemums; there are also carved Latin texts and Chinese characters on the facade of the Ruins of St. Paul's.
