The Mogao Caves integrate buildings, painted sculptures and murals, with painted sculptures being predominant. Painted sculptures in the Mogao Caves reached their heyday during the Sui and Tang dynasties. The social stability, economic prosperity and cultural openness and tolerance of the Tang Dynasty facilitated the extensive development of Buddhist art in the outlying Dunhuang. Painted sculptures from the Tang Dynasty in the Mogao Caves are impressive, richly coloured and lifelike, showing that the plastic arts reached their culmination during the Tang Dynasty and providing a mirror of the Tang society.
