Beginning the Han Dynasty, Chinese silk became the main product traded via the Silk Road. Silk, as a light and highly profitable commodity, made the Silk Road a busy trade route from the very beginning. Merchants along the Silk Road transferred goods. Records from ancient Rome do not mention Chinese merchants trading in Rome, and Changan saw few Roman merchants.
