Beginning the Han Dynasty, Chinese silk became the main product traded via the Silk Road. Silk, as a light and highly profitable commodity, made the Silk Road a busy trade route from the very beginning. Merchants along the Silk Road transferred goods. Records from ancient Rome do not mention Chinese merchants trading in Rome, and Chang’an saw few Roman merchants. Western culture was introduced to ancient China and Chinese culture was introduced to Europe primarily through merchants along the Silk Road. After the Western Han Dynasty, many foreign merchants, primarily Sogdian ones, entered China, bringing foreign cultures and fashions.
