There are different views about the origin and development of the Buddhist statue art of the Yungang Grottoes. In his Datong Fengtu Ji (“An Account of the Customs and Geography of Datong”), Japanese scholar Iwasaki said: “The Yungang style blends Indian, Persian, Central Asian and Chinese styles, and also bears traces of Greek and Roman styles.” In just three decades, the Buddhist statue art of the Yungang Grottoes underwent a shift from the Indian style to the Chinese style due to national aesthetic consciousness and profound historical and cultural deposits, a result of the integration of Indian Gandhara and Mathura art and Chinese art.
