{{heritageName}} : The Abode of Manjusri

The Chinese translation of the Avatamsaka Sutra says that in the east there is a mountain called Qingliang, inhabited by Manjusri. According to this record, many monks believed that Mount Wutai is the abode of Manjusri. After the introduction of Esoteric Buddhism to China in the Tang dynasty, the worship of Manjusri was promoted. Mount Wutai, the abode of Manjusri, became increasingly important in Chinese Buddhism. Temples on Mount Wutai numbered 300 plus; monks from India, Nepal, Japan and other countries were attracted to Mount Wutai to learn Buddhism. Mount Wutai became a sacred Buddhist mountain rivalling the Vulture Peak in India.
