{{heritageName}} : The Secret of Round Buildings

Fujian Tulou, largely intensively distributed in the mountainous areas inhabited by Hakka and Fulao people in southwest Fujian Province, are famous for being unique, large and ingeniously structured.

Among Fujian Tulou, round tulou buildings are the most special. Their emergence was probably associated with fortified mountain villages built on round hilltops in Zhangzhou.

Fujian Tulou were built by Hakka and Fulao people when they migrated. As they largely inhabited obscure mountainous areas, they jointly developed those areas when they   assimilated into each other. In terms of structure and layout, Fujian Tulou are exceptionally defensive and are inhabited by patriarchal communities, reflecting local outlooks on society, morality, culture, clan and ethnic subgroup.
