“Huangshan pine” does no refer to the pine trees grown on Mount Huangshan. It is a botanic species, referring to a type of pine tree growing in areas 700-800 m above sea level.
Covering peaks and valleys, Huangshan pine trees are praised as one of the four wonders of Mount Huangshan. Huangshan pine trees root in rocks and are enveloped by clouds. Influenced by the local environment and microclimate, they have twisted roots, gnarled branches, and sideways, flat crowns, appearing forceful. Some of them are less than 33 cm tall. Some are so thick that several people cannot get their arms around. On summits or mountainsides, they point upward or downward, and through them the wind whistles; in distance springs murmur.
Famous Huangshan pine trees include the Yingke (Welcoming-Guests) Pine, the Tanhai Pine (Pine Craning Its Head to See the Sea of Clouds), the Heihu (Black Tiger) Pine, and the Lianli Pine (Pine with Twinned Trunks).
