{{heritageName}} : Smiling in Hell

An impressive one among statues at the Dazu Rock Carvings is the Statue of the Chicken-Raising Lady from the Southern Song dynasty in the Baoding Mountain. This statue is special because the Chicken-Raising Lady is in the Daochuan (“Knife and Boat”) Hell, the cliff over which is carved with the words “Chicken-raisers are doomed to go to hell". The Chicken-Raising Lady appears lifelike and kind, in contrast with ghastly sights surrounding her, such as the tortured who are shrieking, and Ox-Head and Horse-Face which are sinister in appearance.

Visitors are impressed by the contrast between hell, the abode of condemned souls and devils in Buddhism, and the smiling Chicken-Raising Lady, an artistic depiction of daily life.
