At the Dazu Rock Carvings, an example of the “harmonious coexistence of three different religions” is that Buddhism-based grotto art was borrowed by Taoism and Confucianism, and the founders of “three different religions” appear in one grotto on equal terms.
Another example is that Buddhism gradually absorbed some Confucian worldly ideas. For example, the carvings in the Baoding Mountain depicting parents’ favours depict how parents painstakingly raise children, involving marriage, praying for children, pregnancy, parturiency and other moving scenes, stressing Confucian filial piety.
