Caoyun, an important economic system in Chinese history, was a specialized transport system organised and managed by the government that used waterways (primarily the Grand Canal, and occasionally the sea) to transport specified materials (primarily grain) to the capital (or other important military or political destinations).

The Grand Canal witnessed the initiation, development and decline of the Caoyun system and the resultant far-reaching influence.
